Amit Mishra Returns to Delhi Capitals: IPL's Hat-Trick King Takes Charge of Spin Revolution Ahead of 2027

Some returns are measured not by distance, but by the memories they bring back. And in the world of Indian Premier League cricket, few homecomings carry the weight of experience quite like this one. Amit Mishra, one of the tournament's most accomplished wrist-spinners, is returning to Delhi Capitals. But this time, he will not be walking onto the field to bowl another deceptive leg-break. He will be standing beyond the boundary, entrusted with something different... shaping the next generation of spin bowlers. Ahead of the Indian Premier League Twenty Twenty Twenty Seven season, Delhi Capitals have appointed Amit Mishra as their spin bowling coach, bringing a familiar figure into a substantially revamped coaching setup. It is a return rich in history. Mishra began his Indian Premier League journey with the franchise formerly known as Delhi Daredevils. Across a career spanning sixteen seasons, he played one hundred and sixty-two matches, claimed one hundred and seventy-four wickets, and spent ten seasons representing the Delhi franchise. His finest bowling figures included five wickets for just seventeen runs. His final appearance in the tournament came in Twenty Twenty Twenty Four. Yet the numbers, impressive as they are, reveal only part of his legacy. There is one achievement that places Amit Mishra in a category of his own. Three hat-tricks. Three different franchises. Three unforgettable chapters in Indian Premier League history. The first arrived in Twenty Twenty Eight, representing Delhi Daredevils. The second came in Twenty Eleven for Deccan Chargers. And the third followed in Twenty Thirteen, this time wearing the colours of Sunrisers Hyderabad. Across changing teams and different seasons, Mishra repeatedly demonstrated the rare ability to turn three consecutive deliveries into three wickets. That extraordinary distinction remains one of the defining achievements of his career. Now, the man who once delivered those breakthroughs has been given the responsibility of helping other bowlers discover their own match-winning abilities. And he will not be working alone. Delhi Capitals have assembled a coaching group featuring several distinguished names from international cricket. Sourav Ganguly, affectionately known as Dada, has been appointed head coach. Yuvraj Singh, widely recognised as Yuvi, takes charge as assistant coach. Sri Lankan fast-bowling great Chaminda Vaas will oversee the pace department, while Amit Mishra will guide the spinners. There is an especially fascinating connection between Mishra and Yuvraj. While Mishra holds the tournament record for three hat-tricks, Yuvraj Singh claimed two hat-tricks during the Twenty Twenty Nine Indian Premier League season. Two remarkable wicket-taking careers now converge in the same coaching environment. But the most immediate significance of Mishra's appointment may lie in the future of Delhi's young spin bowlers. Enter Zeeshan Ansari. A left-arm wrist-spinner with an opportunity to develop under an experienced specialist, Ansari has joined Delhi Capitals through a trade involving Sunrisers Hyderabad. In the exchange, fast bowler T Natarajan moved in the opposite direction. For Ansari, the arrival of Mishra could provide access to valuable lessons accumulated over years of high-pressure franchise cricket. Wrist-spin is a demanding art. It requires far more than turning the ball. It demands control of flight, changes of pace, an understanding of a batter's intentions, and the confidence to attack even when the opposition is scoring freely. These are qualities Mishra spent years developing and demonstrating. His guidance could help Ansari understand when to invite a batter forward, when to vary the trajectory, and when to trust an attacking delivery rather than retreat into defensive bowling. There are other possible beneficiaries too. Leg-spinners Vipraj Nigam and Rehan Ahmed could also work under Mishra's guidance, provided Delhi Capitals retain them for the next tournament. Their development would give the franchise another opportunity to strengthen its spin resources through specialist coaching. And this brings us to the larger tactical picture. In Twenty Twenty cricket, the middle overs are often where momentum quietly changes hands. A batting side may appear comfortable, accumulating runs and preparing for a late acceleration. Then a well-disguised delivery, a moment of hesitation, or an unexpected change of pace can alter the direction of an innings. For a spin bowling coach, the challenge is not merely to teach variations. It is to help bowlers recognise those moments. Mishra's experience could prove valuable in building wicket-taking plans, developing bowling discipline, and preparing younger players for the psychological demands of elite competition. Still, there is an important distinction between an exceptional playing career and an effective coaching career. One does not automatically guarantee the other. Delhi Capitals will need to translate individual expertise into a coordinated development programme. Player selection, clearly defined roles, tactical preparation, and consistent opportunities will all influence the results. That is why this appointment should be viewed as an important opportunity rather than a promise of immediate success. Sourav Ganguly brings leadership experience. Yuvraj Singh brings an aggressive understanding of the game. Chaminda Vaas contributes extensive fast-bowling knowledge. And Amit Mishra arrives with a remarkable understanding of spin bowling in Indian Premier League conditions. Together, they form a coaching combination with considerable cricketing experience. But the decisive question remains unanswered. Can that experience be transformed into stronger performances from Delhi Capitals' players during Indian Premier League Twenty Twenty Twenty Seven? The answer will emerge not from reputation, but from preparation, development, and performances when the competition begins. For Amit Mishra, this is more than a return to familiar surroundings. It is the beginning of a different responsibility. A chance to pass on the knowledge of a career defined by patience, deception, resilience, and the ability to seize a moment. Once, he created unforgettable chapters with the ball in his hand. Now, he has an opportunity to help someone else write theirs.
