Cricket के field में, जहां हर ball और हर player की value होती है, वहां rules का बदलना अक्सर एक नया तूफ़ान ला सकता है। England की domestic cricket, County Championship, इस वक्त ऐसे ही एक नए experiment से गुज़र रही है, जिसे देखकर players और experts दोनों हैरान हैं। क्या ECB ने एक नए Pandora's Box को खोल दिया है, जहां substitutes का मेला लग रहा है और खेल की असल स्प्रिट सवालों के घेरे में है?
The Inner Story / असली माजरा
ECB का player replacement trial अब आग के घेरे में आ चुका है। County Championship के दूसरे round में ही, ये नया regulation 6 बार इस्तेमाल हुआ, और इसके बाद इसकी जमकर आलोचना हो रही है। इस Criticism की अगुवाई कर रहे हैं Glamorgan के कप्तान Kiran Carlson, जिनकी टीम को Nottinghamshire के खिलाफ 192 run की हार मिली। इस हार में एक बड़ा factor था Nottinghamshire के allrounder Lyndon James का sudden entry. James ने चौथे दिन सुबह घायल Fergus O'Neill को replace किया और दो crucial wickets झटके।
Nottinghamshire ने पहले O'Neill की जगह Olly Stone को लाने की कोशिश की थी, जो reject हो गई, लेकिन Carlson इस बात से ही frustrated थे कि match के आखिरी दिन एक fresh seamer को field पर कैसे लाया जा सकता है। Carlson ने साफ कहा, "Obviously, with the injury replacement, bringing in someone later on has made a bit of a difference. This is no slight on Notts whatsoever, because we would have done the exact same thing if we were in that position. But to bring in a guy who hadn't played cricket for three days to then come in and bowl, obviously that's an advantage." उनका point बिल्कुल valid है: four-day cricket में stamina और sustained performance की बात होती है, ऐसे में एक fresh player का आना game का balance बिगाड़ देता है.
मज़े की बात ये है कि Glamorgan ने खुद भी इस rule का इस्तेमाल किया था, जब Ben Kellaway (hip flexor) की जगह Sean Dickson को पहले दिन ही टीम में शामिल किया था। Carlson ने यह भी कहा कि इस rule के पीछे की सोच अच्छी है, but "it has to be ironed out in terms of the way it does get done."
पहले County Championship में replacements सिर्फ concussion, Covid-19 या England call-up के cases में ही permit किए जाते थे। लेकिन इस साल, ICC trial के तहत, इस rule को injury, illness और significant life events तक expand कर दिया गया है। ये experiments Australia, India और South Africa में भी हुए हैं। ECB के नए regulations के तहत, replacement किसी भी stage पर इस्तेमाल किया जा सकता है, और replacements की कोई limit भी नहीं है। Somerset और Yorkshire जैसी टीमों ने तो दूसरे round में ही दो-दो replacements का इस्तेमाल किया।
Former England opener और Sky Sports commentator Ian Ward ने X पर इस rule को "complete nonsense" करार दिया, वहीं Kent T20 captain Sam Billings (जो Pakistan Super League खेल रहे हैं) ने Yorkshire द्वारा Jhye Richardson को replace करने के बाद लिखा, "This is a ridiculous rule already!" ECB के head of cricket operations, Alan Fordham ने season शुरू होने से पहले ही टीमों को fair play की चेतावनी दी थी, लेकिन अब लगता है कि टीमें "edges of the regulation" को push कर रही हैं.
Analysis & Numbers
- Second Round Blitz: County Championship के दूसरे round के 9 matches में कुल सात replacements का इस्तेमाल हुआ। इनमें से सिर्फ एक (Worcestershire के Ben Gibbon ने Adam Finch को concussion के बाद replace किया) ही पुराने regulations के तहत permitted होता।
- ECB's Estimate vs Reality: ECB ने Sheffield Shield के data के आधार पर estimate किया था कि यह rule लगभग 25% matches में इस्तेमाल होगा। लेकिन अभी तक, 18 matches में से 5 (28%) में इसे activate किया जा चुका है, और उनमें से 3 matches में तो दो-दो replacements हुए हैं।
- The "Fresh" Advantage: सबसे बड़ा मुद्दा है आखिरी दिनों में एक "fresh" खिलाड़ी का आना, खासकर जब वो bowler हो। यह four-day cricket की demanding nature को undermine करता है।
- 8-Day Unavailability Clause: नए regulations के अनुसार, replaced खिलाड़ी 8 दिनों तक county competitions में नहीं खेल सकता। यह system को game करने से रोकने के लिए है, लेकिन अगले round में सिर्फ चार Championship fixtures होने से यह stipulation भी पूरी तरह प्रभावी नहीं दिख रही।

- Hampshire vs Essex: Noah Thain replaced Tom Westley (finger)
- Glamorgan vs Yorkshire: Will Luxton replaced Jonny Bairstow (thumb)
- Essex vs Somerset: Will Smeed and Archie Vaughan replaced Tom Kohler-Cadmore (thumb) and Lewis Goldsworthy (hamstring) respectively
- Middlesex vs Worcestershire: Ben Gibbon replaced Adam Finch (concussion)*
- Nottinghamshire vs Glamorgan: Sean Dickson and Lyndon James replaced Ben Kellaway (hip) and Fergus O'Neill (rib) respectively
- Yorkshire vs Hampshire: Logan van Beek and Ben Cliff replaced Jhye Richardson and Jack White (both illness) respectively.
- *Replacement would have been permitted before new regulations were introduced for 2026.
The Guru Gyan Verdict:
यह rule, जबकि player welfare के लिए अच्छी नीयत से लाया गया है, फिलहाल clarity से ज़्यादा chaos पैदा कर रहा है। Cricket, अपने nature से ही, कई दिनों तक endurance और skill का test है। ऐसे में एक fresh player, खासकर एक bowler, को game के आखिरी phase में लाना, खेल के balance को पूरी तरह से disturb कर देता है। ECB को यह rule "iron out" करना ही पड़ेगा, वरना County Championship जैसे ऐतिहासिक tournament की sanctity पर बड़े सवाल उठेंगे। यह trial, अभी तक तो एक 'trial and error' ज़्यादा लग रहा है, जिसमें 'error' का पलड़ा भारी है!
