Through all of it, Harpreet Brar has remained one of Punjab Kings' quiet constants. Yet his journey carries a strange contradiction. Since his IPL debut in 2019, no Punjab Kings spinner has taken more wickets than Brar... and still, across seven seasons, he has completed only two full campaigns as a regular player. The image most fans remember is almost cinematic. Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Pressure in the air. Virat Kohli, King Kohli, on strike... Glenn Maxwell, the Big Show, waiting behind him... AB de Villiers, Mr. 360, still to come. Brar removed Kohli and Maxwell on consecutive deliveries, then added de Villiers to complete a spell that should have announced permanence. It did not. He has since dismissed Maxwell three more times and Kohli once more in the IPL, yet availability in the playing eleven has become a recurring battle. A high-arm action, a strong jump, relentless accuracy, subtle changes of pace, and intelligent use of the crease allow him to ask slightly different questions with almost every delivery. His reputation is not confined to the IPL. Since 2023, he has been the leading wicket-taker among spinners in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He also challenged the idea that he was only a white-ball cricketer by entering the Ranji Trophy, and his first season, 2025-26, was emphatic: 23 wickets at 21.26, the most by any Punjab bowler. KL Rahul was among the high-profile names beaten by a delivery that crashed into the middle stump. Limited IPL game time has not reduced Brar's appetite for cricket. He spent time at Punjab Kings' off-season camp working closely with strength and conditioning staff and assistant coaches. In the United Kingdom, where his wife works as a practising doctor, he played club matches after the IPL because any chance to remain connected to the game matters to him. During India's previous England tour, he happened to be in Birmingham while the Test squad was training. Rather than treat proximity as enough, he messaged captain Shubman Gill and asked if he could join an optional practice session. Permission came. Brar trained. Inside Punjab Kings, his relationship with head coach Ricky Ponting, Punter, and captain Shreyas Iyer, Sarpanch Sahab, appears direct and practical. Brar seeks them out, asks why he has not been selected, asks what he can improve, and listens. He admits that being left out after performing hurts... but he also insists that the team comes first. The Impact Player rule has reduced the automatic value of his secondary skill. Punjab Kings have leaned heavily away from spin. Matchups have replaced permanence. Seven years into his Punjab Kings journey, the question is no longer whether Harpreet Brar can contribute.
