Mohammed Shami Bids Farewell To Test Cricket After 229 Wickets, Ending A 13-Year India Journey

उनका आखिरी Test मुकाबला 2023 World Test Championship final था, जिसमें India को The Oval में Australia के खिलाफ हार का सामना करना पड़ा। One Day International World Cup

Some cricket careers are remembered through statistics. Others survive in the imagination through the sound of a ball striking the stumps, the sight of a fast bowler turning to celebrate, and the silent determination required to return from injury. Mohammed Shami's Test career belongs to both kinds of memory. On Friday, November the sixth, Shami announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing a thirteen-year journey in India's white jersey to a close. His farewell arrives with an unmistakable emotional weight. Across sixty-four Test appearances, Shami took two hundred and twenty-nine wickets at a bowling average of twenty-seven point seven one. He recorded six five-wicket hauls. Numbers such as these offer a clear picture of achievement, but they tell only part of the story. His Test debut came against the West Indies at Eden Gardens. In a remarkable symmetry, his retirement announcement arrived on the same calendar date, exactly thirteen years later. He had established himself as an important member of India's pace attack across conditions, earning his place through skill, resilience and repeated returns from physical setbacks. His final Test appearance was the twenty twenty-three World Test Championship final at The Oval, where India lost to Australia. The period that followed was difficult. After his memorable showing at the home One Day International World Cup in twenty twenty-three, Shami underwent ankle surgery and also dealt with knee-related problems. Those setbacks kept him away from the national side for a considerable stretch. In January twenty twenty-five, he returned to international cricket through the Twenty Twenty format and was later selected for the Champions Trophy squad. After the final against New Zealand, however, he did not appear for India in any format, while continuing to feature in the Indian Premier League and in domestic cricket for Bengal. Then came the words that transformed a long period of uncertainty into a definitive farewell to red-ball international cricket. Shami spoke of a heavy heart and countless beautiful memories. He thanked his teammates, his coaches, his family and the millions of Indians who had stood beside him through the good days and the difficult ones. He wrote that he was saying goodbye to the white kit, but never to the memories attached to it. When he first wore India's Test jersey, he explained, he had only one dream: to achieve something for his country. Every wicket, every injury, every struggle and every comeback had helped shape that journey. He has now bowled his final delivery in Test cricket, but the pride of representing India remains. This is an important distinction. His announcement concerns retirement from Test cricket. It does not, on the information provided, announce retirement from every format or from professional cricket altogether. For Indian cricket, the departure is both a sporting milestone and a human story. It marks the end of an international Test chapter defined by persistence, exacting standards and the emotional power of wearing national colours. Sixty-four Tests. Two hundred and twenty-nine wickets. Thirteen years between a beginning at Eden Gardens and a farewell full of gratitude. The figures can be archived. The memory of the journey will last much longer.
