Cricket is a game of patience, and today at the SSC in Colombo, we saw the ultimate test of nerves. India had the match in their pocket, but one man decided to play the innings of his life to deny the Men in Blue a well-deserved victory. After enforcing the follow-on, India bowlers were made to toil for 243.4 overs across two innings, as Sonal Dinusha turned into an immovable object on a pitch that offered very little on the final day.

The story of the second Test was all about India showing who is the boss in Asian conditions, but finishing just short of the final punch. Starting with a massive 503 for 9 declared, thanks to centuries from Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel, India looked set for a massive win. When Sri Lanka were bundled out for 290 in the first innings, the follow-on was inevitable. Even though Sonal Dinusha had scored an unbeaten 103 in the first go, nobody expected him to repeat the feat immediately.
Enter Day 5. The mission for India was simple: take the remaining wickets and go home with the trophy. But Sonal Dinusha had other plans. Batting for a total of 426 balls in the match, Dinusha showed what we call pure class and self-possession. He used the sweep shot against Ravindra Jadeja and Manav Suthar with clinical precision. It was high-class journalism on the pitch: every stroke was a calculated sentence, every block a solid paragraph.
The lower order of Sri Lanka also deserves a mention for their dogged resistance. Keshara Nuwantha and Prabath Jayasuriya played their roles perfectly, eating up deliveries and frustrating the Indian attack. Even Lahiru Kumara, who is usually known for slogging, stayed at the crease for two hours scoring just 12 runs. This was a classic case of drawing a match from the jaws of defeat. By the time India called off the chase and handshakes were exchanged, Sri Lanka had reached 429 for 9, leading by 216 runs.

Let us be very clear: India dominated 90 percent of this Test match. Forcing a follow-on in Colombo is no joke. While Sri Lanka celebrates this draw like a victory, the reality is that the pitch became a flat road and saved them from a total collapse. Sonal Dinusha played a Masterclass innings, no doubt, but India's inability to clean up the tail on the final day is a small tactical lesson. We are still the superior side, but today, cricket and a dead pitch won. If this was a spicy deck, the story would have been over by lunch!
