Sri Lanka had been asked to follow on, trapped beneath the weight of India’s control and the memory of eight previous follow-on defeats against the same opponent. India had also arrived with a six-match winning streak in Sri Lanka, a run that had stretched back to 2015. Yet by the end, that streak was over, the match was drawn, and one name had moved from promise into history: Sonal Dinusha. He had already made 103 in the first innings. When Sri Lanka returned to bat under follow-on pressure, he produced an unbeaten 133 in the second. Those two innings made him only the third batter in Test cricket history to score hundreds in both innings for a side that had been asked to follow on. Vijay Hazare had done it against Australia in Adelaide in 1948, with 116 and 145. Andy Flower repeated the feat against South Africa in Harare in 2001, with 142 and an unbeaten 199. Dinusha now stands beside them with 103 and 133 not out. But the beauty of his performance was not limited to the symmetry of two centuries. Sri Lanka did not merely survive. This became only the sixth occasion in 43 Tests where India had enforced the follow-on and then conceded a lead of more than 200 runs. Sri Lanka’s lower order became part of the resistance as well. Dinusha and Keshara Nuwantha added 112 for the seventh wicket, Sri Lanka’s third-highest partnership for the seventh wicket or lower while following on. Keshara faced 150 balls, the second-most by a Sri Lankan batter at number eight or lower in a follow-on innings. The number eight to eleven batters collectively consumed 292 deliveries. In a match where time itself had become a resource, they spent it with discipline. And Dinusha’s personal numbers kept growing into something extraordinary. He became the eighth batter to score three hundreds in a two-match Test series, matching the record for the most. For Sri Lanka, only Aravinda de Silva and Kumar Sangakkara had previously reached that level. He also became only the third batter to score three hundreds across his first two Tests against a particular opponent. Across his first four Test innings against India, he has gone past fifty every single time. In a young career of just five Tests, he has already accumulated 606 runs, the second-highest aggregate by a Sri Lankan batter after five Test appearances, behind only Kamindu Mendis with 631. Yet perhaps the most elegant detail came in the way he handled spin. Across the two Tests, Dinusha accumulated 173 runs through sweep shots, conventional, slog, or reverse, without being dismissed while playing them. Since January 2007, no batter has scored more through sweeps in a Test series. Joe Root’s 160 during the 2021 Sri Lanka tour had been the previous benchmark. In the second innings at Colombo, Dinusha scored 110 from 196 balls against spin and swept 27 percent of those deliveries, the second-highest sweep frequency among Test innings of at least 150 balls against spin since 2007. It was not reckless batting. It was a method. He used the sweep to disturb length, rotate pressure, and make India’s spinners defend spaces they would rather have attacked.
