New Zealand rugby team, All Blacks, के Head of Sports Science के। यह deal भी लगभग तैयार दिख रही थी। लेकिन... आखिरी समय में वह candidate भी पीछे हट गया। एक vacancy... तीन गंभीर attempts... और बार-बार वही last-minute silence। मगर असली कहानी सिर्फ recruitment failure नहीं है। Laxman ने बताया कि international level और state level के बीच Sports Science and Medicine standards में एक बड़ा gap रहा है। Centre of Excellence चाहता है कि fitness protocols, rehabilitation guidelines और monitoring systems पूरे Indian cricket structure में standardised हों। मकसद यह है कि कोई domestic या state-level player जब targeted group या Indian team के environment में आए... तो उसे standards की दुनिया अचानक बदली हुई न लगे। लेकिन यहाँ भी talent shortage सामने आई। Interview process के बाद association level के लिए सिर्फ सात quality professionals identify किए जा सके। फिलहाल zonal model काम कर रहा है। हर zonal Sports Science and Medicine head पाँच associations को देखता है... states में जाता है... local staff के साथ काम करता है... और कोशिश करता है कि state से international cricket तक player care का transition smooth रहे। जिन medical या rehabilitation cases को state level पर handle करना मुश्किल हो... उन्हें Centre of Excellence rehab team तक escalate किया जाता है। V. Since Nitin Patel left the role in March 2025, the B.C.C.I. has been trying to identify a leader capable of guiding an elite technical system, working full-time from Bengaluru, remaining involved in day-to-day monitoring, and understanding the physical realities of Indian cricketers. The first major possibility was Andrew Leipus. He was not merely another name in a long list. According to V. V. S. Laxman, the arrangement had moved remarkably close to completion. Terms had been agreed. B.C.C.I. secretary Devajit Saikia had held two or three meetings with him. The search appeared to have found its ending. Then, at the last moment, Leipus withdrew, citing family reasons. The disappointment carried an extra layer because Leipus had already been part of the interview process in 2022, when Nitin Patel was selected. That earlier connection was precisely why the B.C.C.I. moved quickly when it learned that Leipus might be available. Once again, however, the agreement dissolved at the final stage. Three serious approaches had now produced three different endings, and the empty chair began to represent something larger than recruitment frustration. Laxman's explanation revealed the deeper problem. Indian cricket has been trying to reduce the gap between state-level and international-level sports science systems. The Centre of Excellence wants fitness protocols, rehabilitation standards, monitoring methods, and year-round guidelines to be consistent across the pathway, so that a domestic player arriving in a targeted group or the Indian team does not suddenly enter an entirely different physical-performance culture. Yet qualified personnel are scarce even below the national level. Through the interview process, only seven quality professionals could be identified for the association-level requirement. The current answer is a zonal structure. Each zonal Sports Science and Medicine head takes responsibility for five associations, travels through the states, works with local staff, and tries to bring state systems closer to the standards expected at the Centre of Excellence. When a case becomes too complex to manage locally, it is passed to the Centre of Excellence rehabilitation team, which then takes over the player's care. This makes the vacant leadership role especially important. The B.C.C.I. is not looking for a ceremonial figure. Laxman has made it clear that consulting or part-time arrangements do not satisfy the requirement. The head must be present in Bengaluru and must operate within the daily performance environment. Experience matters. Reputation matters. But neither is sufficient without a genuine understanding of Indian cricketers. Devajit Saikia described the market problem in equally stark terms: there are very few people, in India or globally, with the level required to lead a technical team of this standard. And the person at the top, by definition, must be better than the system they are being asked to lead. So the search continues. The role remains unfilled, but the work has not stopped.
